a Coalition to oppose wars and defend an independent foreign policy in Aotearoa.

IN THE MOVEMENT

A wide range of groups are part of the movement, including:

  • Political parties such as Labour, Greens and Socialists
  • Environmental groups such as Extinction Rebellion
  • National liberation solidarity groups such as the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa, the Cuban Friendship Society and Americans Abroad Against the War
  • The Trade Union movement- CTU, Workers First, MUNZ, Unite.
  • Muslims, Christians and other faith based groups and individuals who believe in peace not war.

New Zealand can be a voice for positive change in the world. We have led with courage before and we can again. Together, we call for divestment from war profiteering, for military contributions focused on peace and humanitarian support and for relationships between cultures built on mutual respect, understanding, and dialogue.

We believe Aotearoa can:

  • Stay out of wars of aggression
  • Act as a mediator and diplomatic voice
  • Help lead global conversations on peace building and cooperation

Priorities

  • We call for practical steps to keep Aotearoa New Zealand focused on peace:
  • An independent foreign policy that serves New Zealand’s best interests.
  • Responsible investment that ends war profiteering (for example a transition away from fossil fuels. Free, frequent public transport for all).

War brings death, destruction, trauma, and long-term suffering for generations. History shows that domination over others does not create lasting peace or stability — it deepens division, resentment, and conflict. We believe a safer future is built through cooperation, justice, mutual respect, and dialogue between peoples and nations.

We believe Aotearoa New Zealand is uniquely positioned to lead differently:

  • There have been significant times in history where NZ has spoken up against injustice on the world stage.  For example against South African apartheid.  Also aligning with the nuclear free and independent pacific movement, ultimately leading to NZ becoming a nuclear free zone. 
  • We must align ourselves with other nations who are speaking out against illegal wars and genocide in Palestine. 
  • We are small and not militarily dominant and have the freedom to choose dialogue over alignment.
  • We believe New Zealand can be a credible, independent voice for peace in the world.
  • Help lead global conversations on peace building and cooperation

We take action, we educate, host events and initiate protests. We bring people together to unite and demand the end to the current support for international wars.

What does your movement stand for?

We are an action-oriented anti-war movement bringing together people and organisations who want a peaceful, sustainable future. We support collective action, humanitarian values, international cooperation, and solutions based on understanding rather than conflict.

How can I get involved?

You can support the movement by attending events, joining campaigns, volunteering, sharing information, connecting with aligned groups, donating skills or resources, and helping build stronger local communities grounded in peace and cooperation.

Do you support any political party or government?

Our focus is on people, peace, and preventing harm. We work alongside individuals and organisations aligned with anti-war values, human dignity, and constructive solutions. We support political parties with an actively anti-war stance and where the ideology of the party leads to an independent foreign policy.

How long has the Stop Wars movement been active?

We officially formed in 2026, though many of the people and groups involved have been working together and protesting against war since the Iraq War 2003.
